Council Member Steven Ly Scheduled to be on Military Leave

At the September 28, 2021, City Council meeting, Council Member Steven Ly announced that he would be taking a leave of absence to fulfill his United States Army orders. Council Member Ly will be on military leave for the next ten months and is expected to return in August of 2022. During Ly’s authorized absence, the City Council has unanimously appointed current Planning Commission Vice-Chair John Tang to fill in through Council Member Ly’s military leave.

“While I complete my overseas military obligations, I am heartened to know that Mr. John Tang will serve in my place,” said Council Member Ly. “He is a smart, focused, passionate resident of Rosemead with deep roots in our community. He understands Rosemead and knows what is needed to move this City forward. I am thankful for his willingness to come alongside my colleagues and City staff to serve our great residents and business community.”

Mr. Tang has been a long-time resident and active member of the Rosemead community. He currently serves on the Rosemead Planning Commission and previously served on the Rosemead Traffic Commission. Mr. Tang also serves on the boards of several community-based organizations, including the San Gabriel Valley Civic Alliance, the California Asian Chamber of Commerce, and the California Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Institute.

He is currently the Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs for Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling. He leads State and local government relations, public affairs, media relations, and leadership communications in Southern California and Nevada.

Mr. Tang is a product of local schools in the Garvey School District and San Gabriel High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree with cum laude honors from the University of Southern California. He and his wife, Janet, are proud Rosemead parents of their two daughters Hanna and Sophia.

“I am deeply honored to be appointed to serve on the Rosemead City Council,” said Mr. Tang. “I want to express my gratitude to Council Member Steven Ly for his service to our nation and entrusting me to serve the Rosemead community.”

We look forward to welcoming Mr. John Tang to the Council Chambers dais and is scheduled to begin his duties as Council Member Appointee on November 1, 2021. A ceremonial Oath of Office will take place during the scheduled City Council meeting on November 9, 2021.
