September 11 Memorial Program10-Year Anniversary
At 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001, hijackers slammed an American Jetliner into World Trade Center 1. Sixteen minutes later another jetliner struck WTC 2. One-hundred-two minutes after the first crash, both towers lay in heaps where once they were the jewel of the Manhattan skyline. Rescue workers searched for weeks to find victims. Fires burned for nearly 100 days.

At 9:37 that morning, more hijackers intentionally crashed a 757 into the Pentagon killing nearly 200 people, mostly civilians. This was a devastating blow to the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense.
Then, shortly before 10:03, a group of passengers fought hijackers for control of United Airlines Flight 93. The plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All on board perished, but only after preventing the hijackers from reaching their intended target--possibly the United States Capitol.

In total, more than 3,000 people died that day (including more than 400 emergency personnel who came to the aid of others). Next year, 2011, marks the tenth anniversary of the shocking events of September 11th. The City of Rosemead is partnering with the community to develop a September 11th Memorial that will serve as a powerful reminder of that fateful day.

World Trade Center Artifacts
More than 1.5 million tons of debris was removed from the World Trade Center site following the devastation of September 11, 2001. However, members of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Port Authority Police Department, FBI, NYPD, FDNY, New York State Museum and countless others have sought to preserve thousands of artifacts from the World Trade Center. These important items have been preserved at a hangar at the John F. Kennedy International airport, just a few miles from lower Manhattan.

September 11 Memorial Hands SculptureOne of those artifacts now belongs to Rosemead. The Port Authority has authorized the City of Rosemead to acquire an artifact to be displayed in the City as part of a public art project to help preserve the memory of the World Trade Center, the innocent victims, and the bravery of those who responded. It will be our community’s opportunity to show the nation that we have not forgotten about the events that took place on September 11.

You Can Help Build the Memorial
The cost of the project is estimated at $60,000, which includes the transport of the artifact from New York to Rosemead and development and installation of the sculpture.  The City of Rosemead created a September 11 Memorial Donor program to raise funds needed to create the memorial.  This is your opportunity to invest in community and national pride.
